Kenya ratified the UN Convention on the rights of the child on 31 July 1990. Kenya has also ratified the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) and other international instruments that generally affect the rights of the child such as the International Bill of Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms
of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Kenya ratified the Convention
against Torture on 21 February 1997.

Last week in the North Rift region of Kenya, two pregnant girls were forcefully circumcised in Pokot Central District as the season for the rite got under way.
According to the chairperson of Setat Women Organization, Ms Lilian Plapan, the girls aged 15 and 16 years were circumcised during the weekend in Kaptabuk village in preparation for their forced marriages.

Some 140 under-age girls have been circumcised in the larger West Pokot District since the season started last week. Anti-FGM crusaders have reported that 30 girls have been circumcised in Kapenguria and Kong’elai, 48 in Alale and Kiwawa, and 66 in Chesegon and Sigor.

In a related development, an organization that fights the practice of FGM has written to the United Nations to ask them to force the government to intervene and save over 350 girls expected to undergo Female Genital Mutilation in North Rift this season.

The executive director of the Inter-African Committee (IAC) on traditional practices, Ms Berhane Ras-Work, said the State should take action against circumcisers. “By this letter, we would like to appeal to you to stop this gruesome ritual,” she said.

The former Kenyan minister of Gender Alicen Chelaite told the Global Ambassador for fighting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Lucy Mashua on phone 10 December 2009, that “if the West will intervene, the Kenyan Government can STOP FGM.”

Human Rights Day is December 10th. Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay calls on individuals worldwide to make an extra effort to tackle discrimination starting from their own homes and workplaces. “Complacency is discrimination’s best friend,” said human rights chief Navi Pillay.

As a concerned world citizen, I plead with you not to be complacent, but to intervene on the behalf of these innocent children. This practice is a clear violation of the human rights of the victims. It is furthermore torture, discrimination against girls and women and a violation of the UN convention on the rights of the child. The time is now to speak out and take action to spare the lives of these young girls.

Two pregnant girls were forcefully circumcised in Pokot Central District as the season for the rite got under way in the North Rift region.

According to Ms Lilian Plapan, the chairperson of Setat Women Organisation, the girls aged 15 and 16 years were circumcised at the weekend in Kaptabuk village in preparation for their marriage.

According to the Pokot community, it is a taboo to marry uncircumcised women and girls who fall pregnant have to be initiated before giving birth.

Mrs. Plapan said a Form Three student at Kaibichbich Girls Secondary School ran away from home and sought refuge at a rescue centre for girls escaping from forced circumcision and early marriage in Makutano township, West Pokot District.

Some 140 under-age girls have been circumcised in the larger West Pokot District since the season started last week.

Anti-FGM crusaders have reported that 30 girls have been circumcised in Kapenguria and Kong’elai, 48 in Alale and Kiwawa, and 66 in Chesegon and Sigor.

In Marakwet, three girls were rescued from the rite in Tirap and Embobut.

“They are being taken care of by nuns at Saint Luke Catholic church in Tot,” said Ms Maryhylda Kiplagat, the programme officer at Marakwet Girls and Women Organisation.

In a related development, an organisation that fights the practice has written to the United Nations to force the government to intervene and save 350 girls expected to be circumcised in North Rift this season.

In as much as the government must put in place and implement legislation against FGM, it is also the duty of leaders and the powerful in the society to educate the common, illiterate Kenyans on the benefits of allowing our daughters to enjoy their sexuality. They may initially face opposition but these are risks leaders must take.

New worry over FGM, women do suffer:)

A NURSE who specialises in health issues arising from female genital mutilation (FGM) has expressed concern following reports of FGM-affected women being stitched up again after childbirth.

It is believed that more than 1,000 women in Waltham Forest have experienced FGM, and the Metropolitan Police has offered a £20,000 reward for information that leads to the UK's first-ever FGM prosecution.

Waltham Forest Primary Care Trust specialist nurse Jennifer Bourne works at the African Well Women's Clinic in Kirkdale Road, Leyton-stone, which provides advice on FGM-related issues.

Ms Bourne contacted the Guardian following a letter from a reader which said: "A midwife friend has told me how the women have to be cut open in order to give birth and then stitched up again afterwards."

Ms Bourne said she was concerned about this observation.

She said: "This has been against the law since the first legislation, the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985, therefore any midwife who has done this has broken the law."

FGM is a painful procedure which can cause lifelong health problems. It is carried out in 28 African countries and a handful of nations in the Middle East.

The summer is a time when some parents take their children out of the UK to have the procedure done.

Under UK law it is illegal to carry out FGM or to send children abroad to have it done. It carries a prison sentence of up to 14 years.

The African Well Women's Clinic can be contacted on 8430 7382 PROTOCOLS set out by the Waltham Forest Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) outline how teachers and other professionals should recognise and deal with suspected FGM on children.

Ms Bourne said that education, health and other professionals should be aware of which children are from countries that practise FGM, and note when a child is going on holiday for a long time or going for a "special celebration".

The LSCB's guidelines aim to prevent FGM happening, but they also set out warning signs that may indicate a child or young person has already been a victim of FGM.

These include: l A child frequently asking to go to the toilet, and spending long periods of time away from the classroom l Prolonged absences from school l Behavioural changes following a prolonged absence The protocol says that if there is any information or concern that a child is at immediate risk of, or has undergone, FGM, the matter should be referred to the council's social services department, which can investigate under the Children Act.

AIDs and FGM related?

I cannot begin to count how many immediate members of my family have died of AIDs all I could remember is my family coming home in our village to die...looking ematiated and in pain on their death bed..:(( and we would wait for them to die and burry them in our farms or outside the entrance of a Boma (homestead) some behind the boma or on the compound,I remember not crying but wondering how to stop this SLIM! thats the name we had for AIDs .....I would sneak in and ask my dying family how they contracted HIV and some were very shocking ..."I don't know "
was a shock to me! and sad!:(

:( some left the village to look for greener pastures and some were escaping FGM ,some went to look for employment......and Men who contracted HIV went home to their wives and infected them with HIV because its a taboo for men to use a condom on their wives or women in AFRICA:( and that's how I lost some of my family members and left with orphans some living with the virus and some not...

When performing FGM ,IGM (infant genital mutilation) or Male circumcision they use unsterlilized knives,Razors,Scissors, Glasses which has been used multiple times in a group of people...there are 90% chance of HIV virus to be transmitted! Hepatitis C and many other Sexually transmitted infections,.....
Anything to do with cutting or pricking is an endangerment to our health ..whether is chopping off the vagina or stitching it up!
many of the people infected cannot afford treatment or reach where the treatment is...70% of Kenyans have no access to hospitals...in my village alone we have ONE PUBLIC HOSPITAL with one doctor on call! people walk for 100 kilometers to get to the hospital and die under the scotchy sun of our semi arid area.....and when they get there they have to pay 40 kenyan shillings (25 cents $) to keep the hospital running which many if not all cannot afford twenty five cents! and they die on the hospital floors simply because of twenty five cents US dollars! now how can they afford Antiretrovirals? The world has to wake up and join in the fight to end harmful cultures that highly contribute to deadly diseases, like FGM girls escape and go to the city where merciless beast make them sex slaves and in the process contract HIV and when not treated full blown AIDs for how long will you watch in silence? For how long are we going to turn a blind eye to the RAPE IN CONGO AND DAFUR? do you know how man times Women(refugees) told me that they were repeatedly gang raped in the camps and to get here they learn that they are HIV positive? a 10 year old girl was raped in a refugee camp and never told a single soul but me! she is currently on treatment here.... I cry every day I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders , sometimes I feel I am a SUPA WOMAN but painful truth am not I need you to help start doing something ASAP....

The US government will continue to fund HIV/AIDS research, prevention and treatment efforts as part of a more comprehensive global health strategy, officials said on Monday at a special session at the Fifth International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention in Cape Town, South Africa.
Newly appointed US Ambassador at Large and Global AIDS Co-ordinator, Eric Goosby, said the World Health Organization would look at scientific research when deciding whether to lift the global treatment threshold to 350 cells/mm3, but must also consider economic realities.

Dr Fauci said that the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program started by George Bush would continue under Obama, but would no longer require funding recipients to emphasise sexual abstinence. Domestically, there are many unknowns as legislators battle over healthcare reform.

He also indicated that the Obama administration is "very much in favour" of lifting restrictions on HIV-positive visitors and that there is a "clear intention" on the part of both the administration and Democrats in Congress to remove the federal ban on funding for needle exchange. He expressed confidence that both policy changes would soon go into effect.
International AIDS Society Director Craig McClure said that the organisation would hold the 2012 International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC, if the entry restrictions are removed.

This is Another stunning example of the power of FEAR. As long as (Muslim or othewise) men are afraid of a woman’s sexuality and nature, they will use threats and violence to oppress it. I would like to know how sitting in a room with men that are not family members and showing ankles is acting like a whore. She should have a her genitals mutilated so she can resist her sexual urges? This culture is abominable. Women are mothers, nurturers, and homemakers! Why is it that male culture blames women for being whores because they cannot control their own sexual urges, even though it is the woman in the house that glues the family together?
The men in that culture believe women are like horny children. Without male supervision they would be masturbating in corners and screwing random men because they cannot control their sexual urges. Does this even sound remotely plausible?

FGM and it's effect World vision ,Plan international what do you know?

According to Kenya’s gender Minister Esther Murugi(who is my friend), FGM continues to be practiced by 37 tribes in Kenya, ten years after it was abolished and despite the negative social consequences (early marriage and school dropout) and serious health risks.

600 schoolgirls sponsored girls of world vision ,Plan international,MAA collectively fled their upcoming mutilation,We are talking of one month alone! from the statistics of the ministry of gender in Kenya... ask your self how many girls did not make it to the church where they sought refuge? do the sponsors know this?
Fausia Hassan, now 13, remembers the moment, on a quiet Sunday night, when her mother summoned her.

"My daughter, come in," her mother said nearly four years ago, summoning her into a room in their house. "My daughter tomorrow is your D-day; you will be circumcised," her mother blurted out.

The following morning, she recalls, she was made to undergo infibulation, or Type III, the most extreme and brutal form of female genital mutilation. Performed without any anesthesia, the clitoris and inner labia are cut and the walls of the outer labia are sewn together. Afterwards "the girl or woman's legs are generally bound together from the hip to the ankle so she remains immobile for approximately 40 days to allow for the formation of scar tissue," according to a U.S. State Department description of the ordeal.

Protecting girls from Female Genital Mutilation it's the duty of all!

An operation to reopen the vagina--de-infibulation--is often performed ritualistically before marriage or childbirth.

"Recutting before intercourse is traditionally undertaken by the husband or one of his female relatives using a sharp knife or a piece of glass," according to World Health Organization information about Type III. "Modern couples may seek the assistance of a trained health professional, although this is done in secrecy, possibly because it might undermine the social image of the man's virility."

Hassan, who grew up in Eldoret Town, in the Rift Valley province that runs down the center of the country, says that during the procedure she cried until she lost her voice.

She is just one of the many Kenyan girls and women who have undergone female genital mutilation after the passage of the Children's Act law. Passed by Parliament in 2001, the Children's Act outlaws various forms of violation against children, including FGM, for females 18 and younger.

About 14 other countries in Africa have passed similar laws against FGM. Djibouti joined the group on Thursday by ratifying the African Union's Maputo Protocol on female genital mutilation, which requires its member states to ban the practice. But activists in Kenya--sometimes identified as a leader in the anti-FGM campaign--say the country still has a long way to go.
Stronger Law Needed!

Beth Mugo, assistant minister for higher and technical education, criticizes the current Kenyan legislation for leaving women over the age of 18 with no legal grounds to resist FGM. "A bill needs to be enacted to criminalize the practice completely," says Mugo.

Former Minister of State for Home Affairs Linah Jebii Kilimo (My very close friend) says the practice is still widespread. She estimates that 38 percent of Kenyan women have undergone FGM and that the figure soars to 80 or 90 percent for school girls in some of the more rural districts. majority are sponsored girls by world vision and plan international....

"Despite legal instruments already in place, the government has not yet set all structures in place to fully implement their provisions," says Kilimo, who spoke with Women's eNews last September in Nairobi, during a conference about promoting the Maputo Protocol, part of the African Charter on Human and People's Rights that outlaws any form of abuse on women and was adopted in August 2003.

Kilmo says politicians are doing little to actively combat FGM because the practice is still so culturally ingrained and esteemed in Kenyan society. "Despite their actions in December 2001, Kenyan parliamentarians have showed reluctance to discuss FGM," she says. "Indeed it appears that politicians fear losing voters. As a result those who speak against it risk isolation by their peers." so let this organisations not lie to you that they are working with the local authorities because the local authorities are scared of losing the votes of the MUTILATORS!

Unlike other gender issues, such as access to education, FGM is viewed as cultural practice, which, if threatened, endangers the cohesion of an entire community, says Rukia Subow (a supporter of the mutilators,mutilation and a very strict muslim ), vice chair of Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization--or MYWO--a leading Kenyan women's rights group based in Nairobi. "FGM is considered most significant rite of passage to adulthood, enhancing tribal cohesion, providing girls with important recognition from peers." this is an organisation that is funded from the west and works hand in hand with world vision and plan international!

Protecting children becomes an obligation to many and a Nobel thing to do

Rite Now Cloaked in Secrecy

For centuries, FGM was performed openly in Kenya, sometimes as part of public village ceremonies. After being outlawed, however, it went underground. To the dismay of many anti-FGM advocates who worked to dissuade midwives from performing the traditional rite, it is conducted under a cloak of secrecy in more clinical environments, such as rural and small-city hospitals. There are even accounts of mobile FGM clinics, in which nurses and clinicians move from village to village, easily eluding police.

The practice is widely believed to increase a girl's chances of marriage, prevent promiscuity and promote easy childbirth. Women who do not circumcise their daughters run the risk of being seen as irresponsible, immoral and imitators of Western culture.
Pamela Mburia, program coordinator of Amwik,(in memory of Ann Ofula) an association of media women, says the fight against FGM is often left up to people with no commitment to it. Law enforcers, she says, can easily be related to someone who still performs the illegal rite.
Even those who are well schooled and influence the thinking of people in these communities believe in it and take girls for FGM," says Mburia. "How then do you expect a chief or sub-chief to enforce the law in such a situation?" a question that I leave to the World vision ,Plan international,CCF to answer to the world when you say you are working with the local authorities to bring this Evil to an end?

FGM happening here!

I was woken up this morning by a call from a hospital ..on the background I could here a woman's cry...and the doctor asked me to talk to the lady who insisted to only talk to me as am the only one who can understand..so I asked her name and I greeted her she started crying and asking me to help her...she said she poops and urinate from the same hole and she cannot control her bowels or urine and her vagina muscles were so painful! this are calls I never wish to take but these is my calling....her husband who is a strict muslim had insisted on her FGM and to honor her husband she did it..and from that day she lost all her feelings..and everyday the husband complains she is not satisfying her in bed! so this man started to have Anal sex with her because that end was tighter and warmer...OMG! she started developing problems and now she is left open...doctors are working hard to help her...this cruelity and inhumane culture and religious manipulation for how long will it go on I am sick and disgusted ! I swear I will fight FGM to the very end! I will be visiting her this evening in her home....

The other call was from a familiar voice a close friend of mine she always complain of stomach issues and I asked her did they mutilate you? she said yes it happened 5 years ago by her in laws right here in the US! and from then she has suffered painful intercourse and painful unhappy Vagina! she was crying in pain asking me mama Tumaini (Hope) kindly help me...I don't know what my in laws did to me inside my vagina it hurts I have miscarriaged four times I feel like am dying slowly please take me to a doctor who can help me...when I urinate it hurts! O.M.G my heart broke and I couldn't breath I had to talk to Ines Laufer who is an FGM Butt kicker! to help me cool down.... again this is a muslim woman..she was told if she was not going to be mutilated things will go bad... now both women are so scared of their families they just want to be treated and reconstructive surgeries!

FGM brainwashes people, it makes people be filled with fear,despair , while it kills slowly...coz FGM is a silent killer:((((((
